I think that you could do something with your laptop. There is an inexpensive program out there (maybe free?) called Cool Edit Pro. I used it years ago when I was starting to do very basic cut-and-paste composing, but I hear that it is still a great and simple program to use for audio recording. Try Googling for it and see if you can find it.
I'm no laptop expert, but I assume that you will need some sort of audio card to go in that little side port. Sound Blaster makes a decent one that shouldn't be too expensive. Then all you need is a cable -- probably RCA to 1/8" -- the sound card should tell you.
The other option is to use an MP3 recorder, which is what I've used to record nearly every single Abbasso party we've thrown, with the exception of maybe one. I use the Nomad Jukebox, but I don't think they sell my model anymore -- which is too bad, because it is the single most indispensable gadget I own. But there is surely something comparable -- what you want is something with decent capacity (10GB or higher), audio inputs (at least 1/8" inch, digital is also nice), and the ability to set recording quality. There will also be a USB port, which will allow you to copy your recording over to your laptop. I record everything at 256kbps MP3, which is decent quality and keeps the file size manageable (it can get quite large over 4-6 hours). But my recorder can also record in other formats, such as .WAV (the best).
Hope that helps! Beats the old CD recorder that I used to use -- before they were commonplace in computers. You can always do cassettes, too.
