I'm putting serious consideration into pickin up Live 5, unfortunately my knowledge for production work leaves something to be desired. What kind of controller / other hardware would you suggest to compliment Ableton for someone just starting out in this area?

Your computer's mouse and keyboard will do fine...Use them until you really feel the need to upgrade to a different midi controller. I am partial to M-Audio gear because it has worked well for me...

graph you must be talking about the trigger finger by m-audio. i wouldn't recommend that before getting a keyboard style controller, unless your concentration is rhythm w/o melody.. you can pick up small 25 key midi keyboards on the cheap, and I would definitely recommend getting one if you're thinking about getting into production. programming by mouse is slowwwww.

you are correct, it is the triggerfinger.

i have an m-audio radium 49. knob-tweaking is not its perfection. the amount of control that the TF provides is good for fucking around and getting a taste of the effects that the various software programs provide.

still working on that whole 'producers patience' thing.

I watched the demo video on the trigger finger, it looks pretty sick, but I'd have to agree I'd probably look more for a keyboard emphasized controller

Ableton Live is really sweet, the way you go about sequencing with it is very unique. Its something i'm deff looking into getting down the road "one I figure out this Cubase shit" About the midi controller thing, Strauss is right they small 24 key units are nice, its been working well for me for laying down melodies and such. I think though I need to get my ass in check and pick up one of those Roland midi guitar pickups in the near future. Why program on a 25 key keyboard when I can put the 12 years of guitar playing to use.

Alright Strauzzie, you seem to be the Ableton resident on the board here, so I'm gonna pick your brain. I'm ready to push the button and get ableton, however I was looking at the ableton website and they've got a bunch of bundles that you can get with the software.

From poking around websites and looking at demo's I actually think I'm starting to lean towards the trigger finger, I was a drum kid, not a keyboard kid so that looks more of second nature to me.

What kind of a controller are you using or have seen to work the best?

What's up Brandon. I guess if I had to pick just one controller to start out with for a drummer, the Trigger Finger would be it.

My midi controller list is as follows:

for live sets:
- Evolution UC33e (mixer style, faders + knobs)
- M-Audio Trigger Finger
- a customized keyboard (currently in development)

in the studio:
- CME UF8 (bigass 88 key hammer action midi controller)
- Korg MicroKontrol (for use w/ reason mostly)
- M-Audio Trigger Finger
- Radium 61 (this doesn't see much use since the UF8 came in)

keep in mind though that I came from a classical piano background of 11 years, hence the proliferation of keyboard style controllers. The Trigger Finger is a surprisingly expressive and flexible controller, especially once you get your head around the Enigma software.

Awesome, thanks a lot for your input, I really appreciate it...I am now a shipping duration away from becoming the proud owner of Ableton...let's hope it'll be as nice to me as it has you.

Expect further discussion / questions as I'm sure I'll get wrapped around the axel with this once it arrives

One last thing, have you (or anyone else) seen anywhere when 5 is supposed to release? All I can find is "coming soon..."

Sometime before the end of the month, most likely the 25th. (If I had to guess)

My midi controller list is as follows:

i've always wanted a korg prophecy for a controller. the "log" thing is sweet. and as a bonus you get a free synth inside! sweet!

I forgot to ask...what's the Enigma software you had mentioned...forgive me as I am a complete newbie to the in-depth technical side of production...I'm trying very hard to get out of being the "Hey this sounds good lets slap it together" and getting more into knowing what the hell I'm talking about...I'm a dedicated learner, but I know it'll take some time.

Quote:
Enigma is a software editor/librarian that lets you program, store and load setups for M-Audio and Evolution USB MIDI controllers. Currently supported products include the Evolution MK-425, MK-449, MK-461, UC-33e and X-Session, as well as the M-Audio Keystation Pro 88, O2, Ozonic and Trigger Finger. Enigma lets you program your controller entirely in software, and expands your hardware preset memories to a virtually unlimited number stored on your hard drive.
• software parameter editor to easily alter and create memory presets
• librarian to store unlimited memory presets on hard disk
• comes with a large library of VST instruments and all editable parameters
• fast and easy
• free to registered users of compatible M-Audio and Evolution products

Using Enigma is simple. Enigma includes a huge library of files for your favorite VST plug-ins, instruments and host apps. All the controllable parameters are listed for each piece of software. Your controller is also represented graphically on the screen. To assign a knob, slider or button on your M-Audio or Evolution product, simply drag the parameter from the list and drop it onto the controller you wish to assign. Instantly set up the way buttons work by dragging a particular button function (toggle on/off, etc....) from a complete list and dropping it onto the on-screen button that you want to assign. Or view your Evolution controller's Default Presets, then cut-and-paste any number of them into a new memory location.
Do the same with your own User Presets... copy-and-paste... drag-and-drop... this is how editing and saving memories should be done.

Enigma is available as a free download to owners of the Evolution MK-425, MK-449, MK-461, UC-33e or X-Session, or M-Audio Keystation Pro 88, O2, Ozonic and Trigger Finger. Enigma will also continuously receive updates to expand on its features and work with future M-Audio keyboards.

The time has come, Live 5 has officially been released!

Also, if you buy/upgrade between now and the end of July, you can get Operator for $89.
