Post Post subject: Final Scratch questions...

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Hey Gang... I've been kicking around enabling myself with some sort of digial music playback at home for making new mixes... So the decision is either:

A) buy one CDJ-1000... and juggle between vinyl and cds..

B) buy two CDJs... duh (most expensive scenario)

C) Get Final Scratch, and have any option i want.

Here's my thinking... this is really just for home use.. making mixes etc... Every club in this town has CDJs... so i can burn CDs of anything i'd download on beatport... and be able to throw some of my own stuff in the mixes as well. my roommate and i have been working on some good stuff.. i suck for not posting any of it on here yet... i promise i will soon.

Dont worry (doug) i'm not abandoning vinyl.

If you guys wouldn't mind.. i'd like to keep this thread as a place for me to ask dumb questions about FS2 and the software... just in case there are some users here (tronix / KC) that can help me understand it a lil better. like for example:

Can you make visual 'markers' on the waveform view of tracks? I was thinking, what if i could make a colored marker at say, 16 measures out from a breakdown, or significant point... then be able to match those points on two songs... i mean, i do it in my head now.. and that might sound like cheating a lil with the markers... but i like my shit to line up perfect!

Thanks for any info!

if you already have a nice laptop F/S will be fine, although i'm sketchy about trusting my set w/a laptop.

exactly, especially if it's a PC. i would consider my cdj the best 'big' purchase i've made in the past year.

Valid points... I have a nice 15" aluminum Powerbook. and again, i wouldn not play out live with this setup... only for a digital track here and there at home.

Ok, now that i've started looking into this a tad further... i see RANE and SERATO make this thing called Scratch Live. same concept as final scratch.. does anyone know any pro/cons between the two? i'll post the same question on the serato user board.

The Final Scratch interface you can use it as your primary audio driver for use in a D.A.W.

It has a 1/4" guitar input and Xlr input on the back, and all the rca line & phono in's.

I think its Ideal for someone that is a dj looking at getting into production.
You do not need to buy 2 different devices because the interface does it all.

Serato is very good at the dj aspect of things, but I think it only runs off usb and doesn't have all the extra audio options.

If you are leaning toward using a system for DJing only, Serato is the def the best way to go (especially on a mac)...it seems to be the most stable in all environments and have never really heard of anyone having issues with it.

I mean, if Jazzy Jeff, A-Track and Quest Love have made the switch, you know it's rock solid.

Right, this would only be used as a DJ solution... production stuff happens on the G5.

I've read that Serato doesn't support AAC files... which I actually prefer over MP3. I could always get the wave files from BeatPort and convert to whatever... but they want $14 for shipping of a stupid CD, and a $2 WAVE handling charge. BULLSHIT!

I started a thread on the Serato user forum.. we'll see what they might have to say.

I've been using FS2 on a powerbook for about 4 mounths now and I would have to say it's the shit! Laughing You can also get traktor dj studio to go with it. With traktor you can loop a song at any point. It's great for when your running out of time or you can ride the mix all day long! Then add in a cheap $99 midi controller(I use a X-session from m-audio) and assign the filter's to the controller and you have controll over a very powerful filter. It's so much fun!

The only issue I've had was when I had less than 10Gb Hd space. It stuttered while loading a song. I had like under 5gb, so I freed up space and haven't had any problems since. I can play a 4 hour set and record it all in one shot. I have seen 7up running FS2, recording in traktor, streaming the audio and text chating online!

I'm running a powerbook 15" 1.5Ghz W/ 1gb ram
I've seen it run on a 1Ghz without any problems as well.

[/quote

I'll be honest, i've been doing some research, and folks are saying that Serato Scratch Live is more stable... but a lot of FS2 users aren't having any problems either. It sounds like most issues are PC based. I wish i could just play with them both.

Serato does offer the track markers though like i mentioned above... does FS2 / traktor do that too?

track markers? You can set loop points and cue points any where in the song. Both FS2 and serato will run better on a mac as goes with any software.

OK, maybe Cue Points is the term i'm looking for. Here's what i'd like to be able to do:

Track A is coming to a close. I'd like to make a marker point, that signifies 16 measures until where the 'bass' stops, and the simple drum part keeps playing on the track. Then on track B: make a marker 16 measures before where that bass part in that song begins.

So in theory i'll see the marker on A coming up, and cue B at the 16 measure marker... and if i can get it right... the two tracks would end/begin perfectly with no overlap. So with that said, i'd like to be able to make multiple markers like this in each track... at the head, and at the tail. Does that makes sense?

All is possible! You can also see the wave form of the entire track aswell as a 15 sec before and after the play head. You can change the scale of how much you see before and after.

I'm in mac sales if you need any help.

you might need to toss it into your loop folder though...i think it would then keep going...here is another reason why people use FS2.

you can take your track you want to mess with...open it in soundforge or your audio editor and add the extra beats onto the begining/end you are looking for...i have done this with a bunch of lp cuts to extend their intros and outros....works sweet(as long as you cut it proper, butyou know this)

Mikey, thanks for the info... I actually ordered Serato Scratch Live last night from Musicians friend. I've been all over the user boards from both SSL and FS2... so i'm going to give SSL a try.

I have taken a few "artist" tracks and made DJ club mix... just by simply matching the kick drum, and looping that with the intro... yeah, we're talking about the same thing I think. I've been using Digital Performer. Does Sony release Soundforge for MAC? I wish they did for the simple sine wave generator. oh well.
