i'm playing records for the first time saturday since i moved to ohio 2+ years ago and i'd like to be able to record the set. when i lived in seattle i just used my roomate's mini disc player. is there any way to record using my laptop? my boyfriend has an ipaq pda, is that something i could use? i am incredibly ignorant of all things technological. is there a program i should aquire to be able to do this? its not that i think the set will be fabulous (note i said "playing records" and not dj-ing) but i'll have a chance to play 3 hours of everything i want to hear and it would be nice to have it all in one place.

any advice/suggestions

I think that you could do something with your laptop. There is an inexpensive program out there (maybe free?) called Cool Edit Pro. I used it years ago when I was starting to do very basic cut-and-paste composing, but I hear that it is still a great and simple program to use for audio recording. Try Googling for it and see if you can find it.

I'm no laptop expert, but I assume that you will need some sort of audio card to go in that little side port. Sound Blaster makes a decent one that shouldn't be too expensive. Then all you need is a cable -- probably RCA to 1/8" -- the sound card should tell you.

The other option is to use an MP3 recorder, which is what I've used to record nearly every single Abbasso party we've thrown, with the exception of maybe one. I use the Nomad Jukebox, but I don't think they sell my model anymore -- which is too bad, because it is the single most indispensable gadget I own. But there is surely something comparable -- what you want is something with decent capacity (10GB or higher), audio inputs (at least 1/8" inch, digital is also nice), and the ability to set recording quality. There will also be a USB port, which will allow you to copy your recording over to your laptop. I record everything at 256kbps MP3, which is decent quality and keeps the file size manageable (it can get quite large over 4-6 hours). But my recorder can also record in other formats, such as .WAV (the best).

Hope that helps! Beats the old CD recorder that I used to use -- before they were commonplace in computers. You can always do cassettes, too.

thanks for the info dave, i think i will probably just not even try to figure it out with the laptop....i will be far too busy learning to dj in the next 4 days to learn how to actually use my computer for something other then the internet.

the mp3 recorder is sounding good to me. it sounds like the least complicated option. plus, i can always use more neat electronic gadgets.

i am not of the mix tape generation...thats a few years before my time.

Same here. I bought a mini-disc recorder and took the finished product over to someone elses house who had a cd burner.
