Scene Magazine, Sept 7th-13th

POSH PARTY: Local promoter wants to class up Cleveland.

by Cris Glaser

Back from rubbing elbows with the beautiful people in Florida's swanky South Beach, Marcus Sims is confident he can show Cleveland how to party with class at Jet...Set...Go! Says Sims, who organized Saturday night's soiree: "Our parties don't have to be beer and a DJ with two turntables."
Instead, Sims, prefers to mingle with young professionals between 21 and 35 years old, who go out in suits and cocktail dresses to talk about issues that affect their careers, homes, and lifestyles. "Don't you hate the fact that there's no dress code anywhere in the city?" asks Sims. "As long as you have five bucks, you can party wherever you want."
Sims blames the sloppy club scene for Cleveland's brain drain. His outing, he says, is a stylish event for those with downtown lofts, fancy cars, and high-tech jobs. "My thing is to connect with people who travel [and are] into fashion and the arts," he says. "Those people are possibly more affluent and definitely more sophisiticated than the person who goes out in flip-flops to the Velvet Dog." Party starts at 11 p.m. at Spy, 1261 West Sixth Street. Admission is $5; call 216-621-7907.

Funny how he says anyone with $5 can go out and party anywhere... and the admission price of his party is...

yep, $5.

Rolling Eyes

Also, there's irony in the fact that most people who create art don't drive fancy cars, and have swanky downtown lofts.

This article and this pretentious metrosexual make my blood boil.

Anyone want to crash Spy on Saturday night in full-on white trash get-ups? ...and flip-flops would be required, not optional.

Or shall we picket out front with signs that say "If you love Miami so much... why not move there?"

And what will the music be delivered by at his party if he's against turntables? One of those new ipod mixers, no doubt.

Ugh... Mr. Sims makes me want to vomit.

I hope and pray that Mr. Sims chokes on his Fresh Water Scampi Saltimbocca at Johnny's prior to showing up at his party...or at least spills wine on his designer suit.

Sounds like your model DickHead to me. I hope all of his "upscale" activities make up for the fact that he probably has very few hobbies, skills or talents other than following trends and trying to look "cool".

how about some djs sit outside the club on a crate of beat up records looking like they just found dinner in the trash bin out back with a sign saying "there are no djs inside"

hahaha!! i am always out discussing the ol' polictics & mortgage payments, i

"Sims blames the sloppy club scene for Cleveland's brain drain

hahaha
yes, i knew alot of brilliant people here but since the club scene was so bad they all had to just get out of here. you know how much a cities club scene holds the WHOLE of the actual city and its people together.

"Those people are possibly more affluent and definitely more sophisiticated than the person who goes out in flip-flops to the Velvet Dog"

hey, he didnt just fully assume here, he said "possibly"

finally! the books at spy are going to be read. i think marcus will do just fine as long as he has some men dressed in butler suits carting around silver trays piled with....well you know.

He sent me an invite to the party, and the spin definitely was on the elitist tip. He seems like a nice enough person, though, and I'd venture to say that a lot of the snobbiness you see in him is spin that the article has put on the night to make it an interesting and sellable story.

I've met Marcus through e-mail before. He writes a blog about Cleveland nightlife, and it used to be linked off Cleveland.com. The blog featured various events, from hiphop to house headliners. When I found the blog a few months ago, I sent him links to mixes and so forth, and he replied back asking for a 'mixtape.' (He's either very into hiphop and that's why he used that term, or he's just not familiar with how a lot of djs record and distribute promos these days.)

I am the last person to defend mandatory dress codes as I've ripped on them before, but I understand why some people like them. Guys especially act differently when they're in their best. And when you're trying to differentiate yourself from the average plaid-shirt, belly up sports bar, sometimes dress codes are an enhancement to the music in differentiating the vibe.

I don't know...everyone seems to be so defensive on this board lately to anyone you think is looking down on 'you.' Don't take it so personally, give the guy a chance to see what we have in common. Don't show up and hate on him, show up and invite him to promote his event here and then maybe he'll learn a thing or two about DJ 'mixtapes.' He's trying to build up Cleveland nightlife, and at the end of the day, is that really such a bad thing??

I know Marcus personally, and honestly, he is one of the coolest people I've met as of late. He has nothing but good intentions - and his only goal is to retain the young professionals in the region (something this city NEEDS). Agree with the tatctic or not, there is a market for what he is trying to do, and I give him props for making the effort. Do I personally fit into his target market? No, but there are people who do, and I think his mission to try and culture those folks is great.

If this is actually the case he needs to get better copy. The copy above sounds like he's trying to steal what business cloud nine has and nothing more.

If I were to do something dressier and classier...as in actually require suits and skirts at the least...to seriously attract the young professional crowd I certainly wouldn't be doing it in the WHD the way it is these days. five years ago perhaps, but not these days.

The concept is fine. It makes perfect sense to target the young professional crowd, and I actually think some of this group would take well to an appropriate EDM environment. The write up of this Marcus fellow is pretty horrible though, and comes off badly. Plus Spy is a b-a-d venue. Why not test the waters with some weekday 6-10pm happy hours? Give this crowd a chance to network (which they luuuuv to do) while at the same time exposing them to the music?

This 'crowd' could give a shit about 'the musick' and I'll presume this gentlemen could care less either. If he is concernered about luring young professionals back into the nightlife thats fine, but musick is a whole other story. This crowd is concerned with status and the best looking female hanging onto them. The problem is, there aren't enough of those people here in this city. The way I see it, this Marcus guy is kind of like most of us in a sense. He is a minority, be it in his own crowd, but still a minority. He is trying to find others like himself in this city just like we are always trying to find others into what we like. Its not really complicated, It all goes back to the fact that Cleveland is over saturated with preppys, frat boys and teenieboppers who don't fit into either category.

I still think this write up is awful and makes this dood look like a complete douche bag. I'd be pissed if I were him.

What foot? I took that 'writeup' at face value and if presented with the same information again I'd have exactly the same opinion.

Precisely, beecause anyone who reads this who doesn't dig the shiny-shirt poseur crowd is going to have pretty much the same reaction that I did.

A writer who puts a negative spin on Cleveland nightlife as always if its through this kid or others. In the end, it'll be the same as always...people who try to "school" this scene always wind up getting schooled! This city needs to establish an identity and owners and other club goers need to stop looking at what other cities are doing to try to establish something here...period!

Agreed.

I'm rather busy today, otherwise I was gonna take time out to say something similar.

I don't know if it relates to this guy or not though, because as others have mentioned it is only a writer's perspective.
