DJs ARE EXPERT MIND READERS

When requesting a song from the DJ, just say "play my song", or "it goes
something like this" then hum a few bars! We have a chip implanted in our
heads with an unlimited database with the favorite tunes of every patron who
ever walked into a bar & all songs ever recorded, so feel free to be vague,
we love the challenge.

If we do not remember exactly what tune you want, we're only kidding.

DJs know every song ever recorded, so keep humming. Hum harder if need be
... it helps jog the memory.

If a DJ tells you they do not know a song you want to hear, they either
forgot that they know the tune or they are just putting you on. Try singing
a few words for the DJ. Any words.

It also helps to scream your request from across the room several times per
set followed by the phrases, "AW COME ON!" and, "YOU SUCK!" Exaggerated
hand gestures expressing disapproval from the dance floor are a big help as
well, such as the thumbs down or your middle finger. Put-downs are the best
way to jog a DJ’s memory. This instantly promotes you to the status of
"Personal Friend Of The DJ."

DJs are notorious fakers & jokesters and never really prepare for their
shows. They simply walk on stage with no prior thought to what they will do
once they arrive. A DJ's job is so easy, even a monkey could do it, so
don't let them off the hook easily.Your request is all that matters.

If a trance DJ had played at the club a few weeks ago, the next DJ that
follows will automatically know every trance tune the previous DJ ever
played, even if the current DJ is a house or jungle DJ. It's the law.

Feel free to yell Tupac or Biggie!! to a DJ that plays strictly house for
example.

IMPORTANT

When an DJ leans over to hear you better, grab his or her head in
both hands and yell directly into their ear, while holding their head
securely so they cannot pull away. This will be taken as an invitation to a
friendly & playful game of tug of war between their head and your hands.
Don't give up! Hang on until the DJ submits.

DJs are protected by their equipment, & only play the game
when tricked into coming out from behind their turntables. Though difficult
to get them to play, it's not impossible, so keep trying. They're especially
vulnerable during mixing songs.

TALKING WITH THE DJ

The best time to discuss anything with the DJ in any meaningful way is when
he is in the mix. Our hearing is so advanced that we can pick out your tiny
voice from the megawatt wall of sound blasting all around us. DJs are expert
lip readers too. If a DJ does not reply to your question or comment
during a tune, it's because they didn't get a good look at your mouth in
order to read your lips.

Simply continue to scream your request & be sure to over emphasize the
words with your lips. This helps immensely.Don't be fooled.

DJs have the innate ability to answer questions & mix at the same
time. If the DJ doesn't answer your questions immediately, regardless
of how stupid the question may seem, it's because they are purposely
ignoring you.

If this happens, immediately cop an attitude. We love this.

HELPING THE DJ

If you inform the DJ that you are a DJ, the DJ will appreciate your
help with the next few tunes, or however long you can remain standing on
stage. Simply feel free to walk up on stage & join in. By the way, the
drunker you are, the better you sound.

Keep in mind that nothing assists the DJ more than
outrageous dancing, or a tambourine played out of tempo.
Try the congas, they love the challenge. The DJ always needs the help &
will take this as a compliment.

BONUS TIP

As a last resort, wait until the DJ takes a break and then get on stage
and start playing their records. They love this. Even if you are
ejected from the club, you can rest assured in the fact that you have
successfully completed your audition. The club owner will call you
Immediately the following day to offer you a position.

See you at the next gig ...
The DJ

Laughing Funny shit! My favorites are when Someone asks me to "Play something good" to which my response is silence with a shrug...cause I don't know exactly how to respond to this! Another is "Are you going to play techno all night?" and I always respond with..."I'm not playing techno baby, I'm playing House!"

Anyone else want to share their experiences...I know that there has to be more interesting scenarios among us nightlifers!

One of my funniest moments of getting shat upon by laypeople thus far is when I was invited to "dj" at my cousin's graduation party. I made it perfectly clear to my uncle that I play "music that is fast and has a lot of drums and bass" and that I don't play anything mainstream or even remotely familiar to 99.999% of people. But he said it would be cool. So there I am mixing drum and bass records (enjoying myself very much by the way) and my cousin (whose party it was) approached me and asked "hey, can you put on some music?"

Just two weeks ago I was djing a private party...this lady comes up to me and asks, "Do you have anything SEEEXY to play? I want to <insert racy act here> on the dancefloor."

Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing was playing as she made her request....

shit...i dont even know where to begin.....

1. when playing at straight clubs downtown and i get a guy who walks up and ask for a higher energy vocal trance anthem, i look at him confused(knowing he is straight) and simply say "um, come on, i cant do that, you know this isnt a gay club right" that usualy fucks the guy up pretty bad and he just walks away feeling like an ass..

2. sandstorm, dj sammy any of those:
um, how old are you? when was the last time you came out? its 2004/5, im not carrying records around from 97, or anything along those lines to make them feel old and out of touch....not that i ever did carry any of those out with me

3. cant you play anything good. . ask them whats good then work your way into them...if its a girl asking for an 80s tune you can either be nice and tell them this isnt 80s night or you can wreck their night by getting a really surprised look on your face and say "oh my god! how old are you? that will fuck the older girls up downtown really bad. . .anytime you make a mid/20+ girl feel older it just ruins it for them.

4. "are you gonna play anything i can dance to" simply say, if you cant dance to this you probably dont have enough rhythm to dance to anything so what does it matter.

to be honest it goes in phases where i get shit like that alot or a really never get it and i am not really always an ass, it depends on how they approach me with it. usually i am pretty nice and try not to offend them and give them a quick simple answer that kinda lets them know that not what we do here.

i have been insulted pretty bad by some people though over not playing what they want to hear...i can bite back pretty hard though.

one thing i have noticed about requests . . .

i usually only get requests from young (like just-turned 21) clubbers. it's weird because i have played many sets to older crowds (50+) and they are always down for new music and don't try to interfere or dictate a set by "requesting" music. they just kick back and dig the vibes. whereas young people seem to be uncomfortable hearing unfamiliar music and feel the need to hear something "they can sing to" or "dance to." when i play tuesdays at mercury, kids who were born after many of the songs i play, consistently get up in my biz asking for random shit, and people who were actually alive and kicking during the 80's just soak it all in and dance to it all. the same goes for my other genre based sets as well. honestly, these days i would much rather play a party with 40+ year olds in attendance then 21+ year olds. it's sad that in my experience young people just don't seem "to get it."

I hear that man. Older people, being more disconnected from pop culture as it is, probably are cool with hearing new music because to them it's more of a light-hearted fun experience. I love playing for older people, as they are often more open-minded and willing to try out new things. They don't need to try to be cool or "in". They also don't have the pressure of "the masses" that young people are faced with, so whatever is clever to them. A lot of younger chach-asses only know the 40-50 songs on their iPod and don't understand the value of immersing themselves in the unknown.

back when we did our weekly in yompton, we had buttons made that said "I DON'T TAKE REQUESTS" and would point at them when people asked. if they kept it up we got nasty.

had a kid ask me to scratch, and wouldn't take no for an answer. HAHHAA, you know i've been keeping it back. i baby scratched over a few beats, he jumped off the stage screaming an hollering, then danced around like a madman for a bit. i never knew i was that good of a dj!

in the middle of a techno set had someone ask me to play some NIN. believe it or not i had a copy of pretty hate machine in my bag so i did. got some funny looks from my friends, but poo on them!
